Mazda is in the midst of a transformation phase, with new generation models rolling out one after another. The CX-3 and CX-9 have been successfully replaced by the CX-30 and CX-90. However, it's the CX-50 that has been tasked with the most difficult challenge since the CX-5 remains the most popular model in Mazda's lineup to this day. Thus, the new SUV from the Japanese manufacturer has not yet officially positioned itself within its lineup, but it's only a matter of time before the CX-50 dominates sales in my opinion. It surpasses its younger sibling in every aspect. While it may be less affordable, it remains highly competitive in its category.

Mazda hasn't made significant changes to the CX-50 lineup for 2024, which is entirely normal as it's a new model. The Japanese manufacturer's SUV is still riding the wave of its launch, with sales climbing every month. It's a model that seriously has everything it needs to please.

Range and Pricing

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 lineup is divided into three versions. First, there's the CX-50 GS-L with a starting price of $39,300. It offers complete standard equipment and a rather interesting look. In fact, it's far from being a stripped-down model as is generally the case in the entry-level segment. The price takes a slight leap forward with the GT version at $44,250. Fortunately, the list of additional options accompanying this version is quite long. It includes 20-inch wheels, a better audio system, and a panoramic roof. According to Mazda's data, this is actually the most popular version of the bunch. Finally, there's the Meridian version at the top of the range with a starting price of $49,250. This one offers off-road driving-focused features. It swaps out the 20-inch wheels for 18-inch wheels mounted on all-terrain tires.

Category and Competition

The Mazda CX-50 competes in one of the most competitive categories in the market. So, in addition to having to prove itself against its younger sibling, it also has to contend with established and very popular models. Nevertheless, with its style, the features it offers, and its performance, I sincerely believe that the model has everything it needs to be among the top 5 best sellers in its category within a few years.

Rivals: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan.

Design and Technologies

Mazda has managed to offer something new without straying too far from its design traditions with the CX-50. In fact, some confuse it with the CX-5 or even other models in the lineup, which is a good thing. In my opinion, the CX-50 is one of the most beautiful vehicles ever offered by the brand. It's a model that hardly goes unnoticed, especially with its color palette.

The interior of the CX-50 practically gives us the feeling of being in a luxury model. The quality of finishing is impressive. The multimedia system of the Japanese manufacturer's SUV may be its only weak point, but you eventually get used to it.

Performance

The Japanese manufacturer's SUV offers two options in terms of mechanics, starting with the classic 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. This one delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Honestly, that's more than enough for an SUV of this size. The 6-speed automatic transmission is a bit outdated, but it does the job perfectly well. Plus, the Mazda CX-50 comes with all-wheel drive as standard. If you want more power, there's the turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The power of this engine reaches 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque with premium gasoline. It's actually one of the only engines of its kind that can run on regular gasoline. Other than that, this engine is equipped with the same 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Weaknesses

It's clear that Mazda could have done better with the gearbox. The CX-50 doesn't offer many individual options. An electrified engine would be welcome, especially for a model like this.

Strengths

It's a vehicle that lacks nothing in terms of equipment. It offers incredible comfort and a quality of finishing significantly above average. The CX-50 offers dynamic driving, making it one of the most enjoyable vehicles to drive in its category.

Signature Element

Mazda doesn't benefit from a luxury brand like Toyota with Lexus or Honda with Acura. However, its vehicles seem to play between the two categories, and that's what makes the CX-50 such an interesting model. You literally feel like you're in a luxury vehicle at times.

Closing Words

The Mazda CX-50 is new and very upscale. It's a model that has gained recognition and very few buyers regret choosing it. I really like the direction the brand has taken with this new SUV, which will be one of the most popular models in its category in a few years in my opinion.
